Yovani Gallardo (5-8, 5.84) gets the start for the Mariners, while the Rays will go with Blake Snell (1-6, 4.78). Gallardo allowed eight earned runs in four innings in his last start, an 11-3 loss versus the Orioles. He allowed exactly three earned runs in three of the four starts before that, never making it past the fifth inning. He has been better on the road this year, sporting a 5.14 ERA in 49 innings.
Seattle comes in with a 63-61 record and is 29-29 on the road, while Tampa Bay is 60-65 and 31-32. The Mariners have won the first two game of the series by scores of 7-1 and 7-6, while they lead the season series 5-0.
In Saturday’s game, the Mariners held off a late Rays rally. Mitch Haniger and Nelson Cruz both hit home runs, while Haniger also drove in four runs. Robinson Cano also had two hits and scored a run. Ariel Miranda allowed three runs over five innings to get the win. Steven Souza Jr. and Logan Morrison homered for the Rays, while Luke Odorizzi took the loss.
We said to take the Rays on Saturday and they fell a bit short, but we’re going to the well once more. Seattle isn’t good enough to beat a team as decent as the Rays six times in a row, plus Tampa Bay is favored for a reason. Never a bad reason to fade Gallardo.
