Adam Conley (5-5, 5.32 ERA) draws the start for the Marlins, while Jacob deGrom (13-6, 3.36) get the nod for the Mets. Conley is making his seventh start back with the Marlins since being recalled from the minors in July. He has improved his season numbers since his return, three times working into the seventh inning and once into the eighth. He most recently went 6 1/3 innings versus the Giants in an 8-3 win, giving up three earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts and three walks. He carries a 1.48 WHIP and has been much better on the road, with a 3.21 ERA over 33 2/3 innings. deGrom has an elite strikeout rate, having fanned 183 hitters in 158 2/3 innings. He has been below his standards in two of his three August starts, most recently giving up five earned runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss to the Yankees. In his start before that, he shut out the Phillies over 6 2/3 innings in a 10-0 victory as he struck out nine and only allowed four hits.
The Marlins enter with a 59-62 record and are 27-33 on the road, while the Mets are 54-67 and 27-35. Miami won the opener in the series 3-1, while New York registered an 8-1 win Saturday.
In Saturday’s game, the Mets received six innings of one-run ball from Rafael Montero. Wilmer Flores, Kevin Plawecki and Dominic Smith all homered in the win. Marcel Ozuna was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Marlins, while Vance Worley gave up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Conley looks like a more confident pitcher since his return from the minors, while deGrom is the type of pitcher who typically bounces back strong from a subpar start. With the Mets looking at a lot of young players while rebuilding their offense, don’t expect them to put up eight-run games like Saturday very often.
