Padres edge Phillies
San Diego had lost four of its last five going into Saturday, but the Padres grabbed a 5-3 victory over the Phillies last night. The Padres are 57-65 on the season, 28-32 on the road and 59-55 with the over. Joey Lucchesi is starting today. He is 7-7 on the year with a 4.25 ERA for San Diego.
The Padres fell behind 3-0 early on Saturday, but fought back with five runs over the fourth and fifth innings. San Diego drove in the five runs on three singles and a double. Josh Naylor had a two-run double to lead the way while Eric Hosmer had three hits and Manny Machado and Hunter Renfroe each put up two hits. Dinelson Lamet moved to 2-2 on the season on the mound by throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Kirby Yates earned his 34th save of the year by throwing a scoreless ninth.
Phillies end win streak
The Phillies had their four-game win streak come to an end on Saturday in a 5-3 loss at home to the Padres. Philly is now 64-59 on the season, 38-27 at home and 62-58 with the under. Jason Vargas gets the start today. He is 6-6 on the season with a 4.03 ERA.
Zach Eflin struggled on the mound in his start on Saturday, giving up three runs on seven hits over just 3.2 innings. Nick Pivetta ended up taking the loss in relief, falling to 4-5 on the year. He gave up two runs over 1.1 innings of work. At the plate, J.T. Realmuto hit a home run and finished with two hits. Realmuto has 19 home runs on the year.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 2-10 in their last 12 games following a win and 18-38 in their last 56 Game 3’s of a series.
Philadelphia
The Phillies are 5-2 in their last seven Sunday games and 10-4 in their last 14 games following a loss.
Prediction:
Vargas has pitched pretty well for the Phillies in his three starts. Not great, but competitive. He has given up eight runs over 17.1 innings. Vargas has thrown six scoreless innings against the Padres this year. The Phillies are hoping he can do that again to get Philly back to a win. Lucchesi has really struggled on the road, as he has a 6.15 ERA over 10 starts away from San Diego this season. Despite the loss on Saturday, I like the Phillies to bounce back today. They have the better pitching today and the better hitting.
MLB Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies +100
