Astros in rare skid
The Astros are coming off a very surprising weekend series where they were swept at home by the Texas Rangers. They have lost four straight to fall to 67-40 overall and 35-16 on the road. Houston is putting up 4.98 runs per game this year on offense while allowing 3.31 per contest on defense.
Gerrit Cole gets the start for Houston on Monday night. He is 10-2 on the year through 21 starts with a 2.54 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Cole has pitched 134.2 innings this season and has 186 strikeouts with 46 walks.
Mariners looking to get hot
The Mariners have been hot-and-cold over recent weeks. They are just 4-6 in their last 10 and coming off a series loss to the Angels in Los Angeles. Seattle is 62-43 overall and four games behind Houston in the AL West. The Mariners are 34-19 at home this year. Seattle is putting up 4.24 runs per game on offense while giving up 4.27 per game on defense.
James Paxton gets the start for the Mariners tonight. He has started 20 games on the year and has an 8-4 record with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. This is his first start since July 12 due to a back injury. Paxton has 155 strikeouts and 33 walks over 119.1 innings of work in 2018.
MLB Betting Trends
Houston
The Astros have won Cole’s last five road starts against a team with a winning record and they have won nine of his last 12 road starts as well.
Seattle
The Mariners have lost their last seven after a win, but they are 11-5 in Paxton’s last 16 starts against a team with a winning record.
Prediction:
Paxton has been a good pitcher for Seattle, but the long layoff may make him a touch rusty, which isn’t good against a team like Houston. Cole has been strong on the road this year and I think Houston will find its hitting a little bit tonight. Seattle is starting to feel the loss of Robinson Cano in the lineup, as they now are allowing more runs than they are scoring. That’s not a recipe for success.
The Pick: Houston Astros -120
