Cardinals lose three of five at Cubs
St. Louis dropped Sunday’s finale by a 7-2 score at the Cubs to lose three of five in a series that included a makeup game. Matt Carpenter saw his home run streak end at six straight games, where he hit a total of eight home runs to give him 25 on the season. He was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run in Sunday’s contest. Yadier Molina finished 2-for-5 with a double. Dexter Fowler went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Yairo Munoz was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Mike Mayers took the loss in relief as he allowed two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk over two innings.
Reds swept at home by Pirates
Cincinnati lost all three home games to Pittsburgh over the weekend to extend its losing streak to four games. The Reds fell behind 9-0 in the fourth inning Sunday before settling for a 9-2 defeat. Jose Peraza went 2-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot. Phillip Ervin went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs. Matt Harvey took the loss as he was shelled for eight earned runs on eight hits with two strikeout and no walks over 3 2/3 innings.
Daniel Poncedeleon (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his MLB debut tonight for St. Louis, while Cincinnati will counter with Luis Castillo (5-8, 5.49).
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The over is 10-1 in the last 11 Cardinals games overall. St. Louis is 17-4 in the last 21 meetings.
Cincinnati
The over is 8-1-1 in the last 10 Reds Monday games. The over is 19-5-2 in the last 26 Reds games overall.
Prediction:
Poncedeleon has put up solid numbers in the minors and the Reds don’t have as much of a scouting report on him. St. Louis has seen Castillo recently and knows what he has to offer. With Carpenter red-hot and in a hitter’s ballpark, he just might start a new home run streak and lead the Cardinals to a victory here. I’d actually probably lean toward the under if I bet that way, but I’m going to pull the trigger on St. Louis as the hosts have returned to struggling as of late.
