Rangers’ Hamels fails to make it out of first inning of last start
Cole Hamels surrendered seven runs (three earned) on five hits over 2/3 of an inning in Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Tigers. Yikes. Hamels fanned Mikie Mahtook to open the game, but it would all be downhill from there. Nicholas Castellanos would follow with a solo home run, after which Hamels surrendered a pair of singles and a pair of walks. He almost escaped the frame allowing just two runs, but with two outs, Jose Iglesias hit an infield single to drive in a run and Delino DeShields then committed a crucial bases-clearing error. Mahtook then doubled to knock Hamels out of the game. The Rangers trailed 7-0 at frame’s end. This start is made all the more painful by the fact that Hamels was rocked for seven runs by the White Sox last time out. The veteran southpaw will try to rebound in a road showdown with the Orioles when he next toes the rubber. He’ll take a 4.28 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 106/39 K/BB ratio (103 innings) into that contest.
Orioles’ Cobb leaves start due to blisters
Alex Cobb was removed from Sunday’s start against the Twins due to a blister on his right index finger. Cobb worked into the sixth inning, before leaving with the team’s trainer. It’s unclear if the blister is serious enough to land him on the disabled list, or will be treated day-to-day.
MLB Betting Trends
Texas
The Rangers have lost six of their last seven games versus the Orioles.
Baltimore
The Orioles have won four straight games against the Rangers in Baltimore.
Prediction:
Hamels has not pitched well in his last five games, surrendering four home runs in 23 2/3 innings of work while producing a 5.70 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. It’s the same story for Cobb (who has been bad all season, actually), as he’s 0-3 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over his last 30 1/3 innings pitched. Cobb has struggled with the long ball as well, allowing five home runs in his last five games. With both pitchers in poor form, I like the over in the first five innings tonight.
The Pick: Rangers/Orioles over 5.5 (+100)
