Cubs’ Hendricks takes no-decision vs. Pirates
Kyle Hendricks worked five innings of one-run ball Sunday in a loss to the Pirates. Josh Harrison delivered that run with a solo shot in the top of the first inning. Hendricks mostly settled in from there, but the Cubs’ bullpen was not up to the task in this one — and neither was the Cubs’ offense — as the Pirates went on to win 7-1. Hendricks is 4-5 on the year with a 3.48 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 61/19 K/BB ratio in 77 2/3 innings. He’ll face the rival Cardinals next.
Cardinals’ Martinez walks seven in bad start vs. Reds
Carlos Martinez couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning, allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings in a 7-5 loss to the Reds on Sunday. Martinez really struggled with his command, walking a whopping seven hitters in the 3 2/3 innings on top of allowing four hits in that time frame. He did strike out five, but his fastball command was atrocious, and he just hasn’t looked the same since returning from the disabled list on June 6. The poor start balloons Martinez’s ERA to 2.50 from the 1.83 it sat at coming into Sunday. He’s scheduled to make another start on Saturday against the Cubs.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The Cubs are 4-0 in Hendricks’ last four starts versus the Cardinals and are 13-6 in their last 19 meetings with the Redbirds overall.
St. Louis
The Cardinals have won four of Martinez’s last five starts versus the Cubs and seven of his last nine home outings against Chicago.
Prediction:
The Cardinals offense has been in a season-long funk so naturally I took the under last night and the Cubs nearly doubled the betting total on their own. No matter: I see tonight playing out differently The under is 4-1-2 in Martinez’s last seven starts and the Cardinals will once again be without Jose Martinez, one of their only good hitters. On the other side, the under is 21-8 in Hendricks’ last 29 starts and is 12-5 in his last 17 road outings.
The Pick: Cubs/Cardinals under 8.5
