D-backs drop two of three at Giants
The race in the NL West tightened somewhat with Arizona losing two of three at San Francisco, falling 5-4 in 10 innings in Wednesday’s series finale. The good news for Arizona is that slugging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is breaking out of his slump, going 4-for-5 with three doubles plus a run and two RBIs. Daniel Descalso had a double plus a walk and two RBIs in four at-bats. Chris Owings went 1-for-3 and drew two walks. Andrew Chafin suffered the loss as he allowed the game-winning run in the 10th, coming after Brad Boxberger allowed two runs in the ninth to blow the save.
Rockies unable to complete sweep over Reds
Colorado lost a 13-inning marathon Thursday afternoon at the Reds by a count of 7-5, coming after the Rockies had won the previous two games in the series. Colorado blew a 5-2 lead, giving up two in the eighth and another in the ninth. D.J. LeMahieu paced the Colorado offense by going 1-for-5 with a double and scoring a pair of runs. Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-6, while Nolan Arenado went 2-for-5 plus a walk. Carlos Gonzalez was also 2-for-5 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Mike Tauchman finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Ryan McMahon added a triple, a run scored and and RBI. Chris Rusin took the loss in relief after Wade Davis blew the save in the ninth.
Zack Greinke (4-4, 3.44 ERA) will take the mound for Arizona tonight, while Colorado counters with German Marquez (4-5, 4.38).
MLB Betting Trends
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 2-11 in their last 13 road games. Arizona is 8-18 in its last 26 games overall.
Colorado
The over is 7-0-2 in the last nine Rockies games overall. The under is 9-3 in Marquez’s last 12 home starts.
Prediction:
Greinke hasn’t been dominant lately, although more often than not perfectly sufficient. Marquez usually pitches fairly well at Coors Field and I trust him more here. Arizona has played a bit better of late, but still was unable to take the series at the Giants. I feel more comfortable betting on host Colorado here in what is almost a pick’em spot.
