Giants’ Samardzija struggles with command in ugly outing vs. Astros
Jeff Samardzija yielded four hits and four runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in the Giants’ loss to the Astros. He handed out five free passes in addition to his three strikeouts. Samardzija didn’t allow a hit until the third inning when he gave up an infield single to George Springer. Springer got to him again in the fifth, this time taking Samardzija deep for a two-run homer.
Samardzija’s command was an issue all day as the right-hander threw just 51 of his 97 pitches for strikes. Wednesday extended Samardzija’s winless streak to six starts. He’ll take an ugly 6.23 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at hitter-friendly Coors Field in Colorado.
Rockies’ Freeland picks up quality start in loss
Kyle Freeland logged a quality start in Wednesday’s loss to the Dodgers, allowing three runs on six hits over his 6 1/3 innings. Freeland walked three and struck out three in the contest. While Freeland didn’t pitch poorly in this one, he needed to be perfect as Kenta Maeda was electric on the other side.
Freeland has been a revelation for the Rockies this season, registering a 3.28 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 52/21 K/BB ratio across his 60 1/3 innings. He’ll look to get back in the win column when he does battle against the Giants on Tuesday.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco
The Giants are 1-5 in Samardzija’s last six starts versus the Rockies. San Francisco is also just 7-19 in its last 26 games played at Coors Field.
Colorado
The under is 4-1 in Freeland’s last five starts versus the Giants and is 6-2-1 in Samardzija’s last nine starts versus the Rockies.
Prediction:
With the way Samardzija has pitched recently the over looks attractive but even with the Rockies and Giants both swinging the bats well, the score only pushed on Monday night with the total sitting at 11. Thus, I’m just going to take the Rockies and hope Samardzija blows up again like he did in Houston. The Giants have been an awful bet when he pitches, losing all four of his last four starts and posting a 1-6 record in his last seven road outings. For some reason, they’re also 4-18 in his last 22 starts when he pitches the second game of a series.
The Pick: Colorado Rockies -140
