Padres take opener
San Diego took the opener of this weekend series on Friday, 6-3, for its fourth straight victory. The Padres are 27-24 on the season, 13-10 on the road and 26-23 with the under. Cal Quantrill gets the start for San Diego today. He is 0-2 on the season with a 5.40 ERA.
The Padres were able to grab the win on Friday thanks to a 3-run eighth inning. Hunter Renfroe hit his 12th home run of the season, a three-run blast, in the eighth to give San Diego the advantage. San Diego drove in five of their six runs with the long ball. On the mound, the Padres pitching gave up just three hits. Joey Lucchesi struck out 11 over 6.2 innings. He didn’t factor into the decision, as Matt Wisler got the win in relief while Craig Stammen got his second save.
Jays drop another
Toronto has suffered three straight losses following Friday’s defeat. All three have been on their home field. The Blue Jays are 20-31 on the season, 9-17 at home and 28-22 with the under. Toronto has Edwin Jackson getting the start today. He is 0-1 on the season with a 6.30 ERA.
Trent Thornton matched Lucchesi on the mound, allowing three runs over six innings with 10 strikeouts, but he didn’t factor into the decision. Daniel Hudson took the loss by allowing the three-run home run in the eighth. He is 3-2 on the season. Toronto managed just three hits at the plate and two were home runs. Freddy Galvis had a two-run shot while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a solo home run, his first of the year.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres have won four straight interleague games and they are 5-1 in their last six interleague games against a right-handed starter.
Toronto
The Blue Jays are just 1-6 in their last seven home games and 4-12 in their last 16 games against a right-handed starter.
Prediction:
Quantrill has struggled so far this year in three starts and San Diego has lost all three games he has appeared in. The same can be said for Toronto and Jackson. The Jays have lost both of his appearances. With both starters not being too reliable, I look to the bullpen and San Diego has the advantage there and it showed on Friday. The Padres can get that one timely hit while the pen locks up the lackluster Toronto hitting.
MLB Prediction: San Diego Padres -130
