Johnny Cueto allowed two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts on Saturday but did not factor into the decision versus the Pirates. Cueto was cruising through four frames but ran into a buzzsaw during the fifth inning, allowing four base hits and two runs before being taken out of the game. The 35-year-old’s pitch count was sitting at just 72 upon exiting, but it was clear that the Pirates had his number and were going to continue to do damage. Cueto now carries a 3.62 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 27 1/3 innings into his next start which is scheduled to be against the Reds in Cincinnati.

Tyler Mahle went seven innings and allowed two runs on Saturday but didn’t factor in the decision against the Rockies. He struck out four and didn’t issue a walk. Mahle didn’t get off to a great start, as he allowed a long — 478 feet to be exact — homer to Ryan McMahon in the first with a runner on. That would be it for the Rockies in terms of run-production for the rest of the start. It’s the first time this year that the 26-year-old has been able to throw seven innings, as his previous long outing was 6 2/3 frames against the Diamondbacks back on April 21. Mahle lowers his ERA on the season to a very solid 2.93, and he’s struck out 52 hitters against 15 walks in eight starts and 43 innings. Mahle is a must-start on Thursday against the Giants.
