Giants’ Blach pitches into eighth inning as Giants beat Braves
Ty Blach allowed just two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings in Saturday’s win over the Braves. The Giants provided Blach all sorts of run support, running out to a 9-2 lead after four innings. He would not play games with that advantage, cruising into the eighth inning before a few runners reached to push him to the dugout. Cory Gearrin had his back out of the pen, though, and no inherited runners would score after Blach exited stage left. The southpaw will bring a 3.60 ERA and 1.36 WHIP to the table in a road date with the Phillies next time out.
Phillies’ Velasquez holds Nationals to one run in victory
Vince Velasquez held the Nationals to one run in five innings to earn a win on Saturday. The only hit he allowed was a solo dinger by shortstop Wilmer Difo in his final inning of work. He struck out four. It wasn’t all roses though as it took him 92 pitches to complete five innings, partly because he issued four bases-on-balls. His record improves to 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through seven starts.
