Padres’ Lauer crushed by Rockies at Coors
Eric Lauer allowed seven runs – six earned – with six hits, four walks and three strikeouts over three innings in a loss Tuesday in Colorado.
Lauer had a rough major league debut, throwing just 44 of his 74 pitches for strikes while posting a game score of just 20. There will be better days ahead, but he’ll need to get ahead of batters if he wants to have a chance. Lauer had first-pitch strikes to just 10 of the 19 batters he faced. Making your debut at Coors Field is a bit rough, too.
Giants’ Samardzija roughed up by Nationals in last start
Jeff Samardzija was roughed up for eight hits and six runs in only 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in the Giants’ loss to the Nationals. He fanned three and also issued three free passes over his 86 pitches.
Samardzija got off to a disastrous start, yielding three first-inning runs on three hits with two coming on a two-out double by Andrew Stevenson. He put up blank slates in the second and third innings but unraveled in the fourth, serving up a three-run homer to Matt Adams that would ultimately end his outing. The former Notre Dame football star will try to get back on track in his next start Monday against the Padres.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres have won 23 of their last 33 meetings with the Giants and are 9-4 in their last 13 games in San Francisco.
San Francisco
The Giants have won seven of their last 10 games overall and are 5-2 in their last seven home games, which includes taking three of four against the Dodgers at AT&T Park over the week.
Prediction:
Let’s give the Giants some credit here. They lost Samardzija, Madison Bumgarner and Mark Melancon to start the season. They have since lost Hunter Pence (although Mac Williamson proved to be significantly better), then Williamson, Joe Panik and Johnny Cueto for a start or two. They’ve also faced a brutal schedule, one that featured the Dodgers 11 times, the Diamondbacks six times and the Nationals three times. And through it all, they’ve managed to play .500 baseball at 14-14. That’s pretty impressive. It’s not like they’ve been getting fat and happy on the Reds, Marlins and Royals.
Anyway, this isn’t too bad of a price to lay on the Giants considering they’re at home and they have the edge in the pitching matchup. For one reason or another, the Padres have had their number but San Diego is 3-7 over its last 10 games and the Giants’ record is reverse. Time to give the Giants a little respect.
The Pick: San Francisco Giants -150
