Marlins’ Richards coming off brilliant performance vs. Pirates
Trevor Richards fired off seven innings of two-hit, shutout ball while taking a no-decision in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Richards was not throwing the ball by Pirates batters in Saturday’s contest — he struck out just two on the evening — but even without inducing the whiffs, he had the opposition handcuffed. Only Francisco Cervelli managed to solve his puzzle, picking up both hits on his line, including a double.
Alas for the 24-year-old right-hander, Jameson Taillon was up to the task and the game was scoreless until the Pirates finally broke through with a singular run in the top of the ninth inning. Both starters took no-decisions.
This brilliant outing was a needed one for Richards, who had pitched to an unsightly 8.64 ERA through his first two starts of the year. He’ll try to build off it in a road showdown with the Brewers next time he takes to the mound.
Brewers’ Chacin coming off encouraging start vs. Mets
Jhoulys Chacin allowed one run in just four innings against the Mets on Sunday in a no-decision. Chacin was able to strike out four while allowing just the one run, but he also allowed five hits and walked three in a start the Brewers were hoping he could go deep. He couldn’t.
The good news is it’s a much better effort for the 30-year-old starter than we’ve seen for the most part this year. He’ll look to have similar results — but a high inning count — against the Marlins on Friday.
MLB Betting Trends
Miami
The Marlins have lost 11 of their last 14 games overall.
Milwaukee
The Brewers have won six of their last eight games played on Friday.
Prediction:
Richards has some boom-or-bust potential but I’m taking the over 9 mostly based on Chacin and the Brewers’ offensive potential now that Christian Yelich is back. Chacin is coming off a nice outing against the Mets but the wind was blowing in at nearly 20 mph and the temperature was between 35 and 40 degrees when he pitched in New York. Now that he’s back pitching in hitter-friendly Miller Park, I’ll roll the dice on the over.
The Pick: Marlins/Brewers over 9
