Wainwright coming off encouraging start for Cardinals
Adam Wainwright yielded three earned runs over seven innings Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers.
It was a much sharper outing than his regular-season debut last Thursday against the Diamondbacks, in which he lasted just 3 2/3 innings and walked four batters. Wainwright issued no free passes on Wednesday and struck out four, though the Brewers did tag him for eight hits — including two home runs.
Chatwood not sharp for Cubs in early going
Tyler Chatwood yielded five runs over five innings in a loss to the Pirates on Tuesday.
Chatwood only walked one batter this time, but he gave up nine hits, including a solo homer to Starling Marte. The 28-year-old had some momentum as a fantasy sleeper after leaving Coors Field behind, but the results have been mixed through two starts. He’s had his last two starts pushed back because of poor weather in Chicago, with Sunday’s Braves/Cubs game postponed and last night’s Cardinals/Cubs game canceled as well.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 1-8 in their last nine games against the Cubs and are winless at 0-5 in their last five meetings in Chicago. That said, they’re 11-4 in Wainwright’s last 15 starts versus the Cubs and are 13-5 in his last 18 road starts versus Chicago.
Chicago
The Cubs are 9-3 in their last 12 games when facing a team to open a new series and are 15-7 in their last 22 games versus National League Central rivals as well.
Prediction:
I liked the Cardinals getting plus odds yesterday before the game was postponed and I’m not going to come off St. Louis. The Cubs’ starting pitching has struggled and Chatwood has yet to impress. At least Wainwright is coming off a good start and has fared well over his career versus the Cubs. The Cardinals are also hot, winning four in a row.
The Pick: St. Louis Cardinals +115
