in the preseason when coming off a loss and
facing an opponent coming off a win, including
0-13 ATS when they are at home.

    NCAA:

It’s doublin’ up time in Dublin, where the double-avenging Wildcats kick off the 2025 season against Iowa State. Ironically, K-State won the box score in both of Iowa State’s wins the past two seasons, which sets up perfectly for a Chris Klieman special: the Wildcats are 3–1 ATS as an underdog under his watch when seeking double revenge-exact. Wildcat backers will like this:
Kansas State returns 51 letterwinners, the most they’ve had since 2003. In fact, it marks the sixth straight season they’ve brought back 45+. Add in eight super seniors, and it’s no surprise the Cats rank No. 14 nationally in Returning Starting Production. We’re not denying Matt Campbell’s magic
as a dog — he’s 47–22 ATS all-time in the role — but he’s also coming off the first 11-win season in Iowa State’s 133-year football history. And here’s a nugget for the location nerds: Teams seeking revenge in season openers played in Ireland are 2–0 SU/ATS. The tea leaves say Kansas State. And so do we.

WESTERN KENTUCKY over Sam Houston by 4
Fresh faces and fi repower headline both sidelines in this one. After
reaching their sixth straight bowl game last season, the Hilltoppers hit reset with new co-coordinators on both sides of the ball and a new
quarterback: Maverick McIvor, a decorated transfer from Abilene Christian.
He tossed for over 8,000 yards and 63 touchdowns across three FCS
seasons, leading his team to a conference title and FCS playoff berth in 2024. Meanwhile, Sam Houston turns the page with Phil Longo taking
over as head coach. He replaces K.C. Keeler (98–39), who bolted for
Temple after a 10-win campaign in just the program’s second season
at the FBS level. Longo, the former OC at North Carolina and Wisconsin,
brings a high-octane Air Raid attack — and he’s got a weapon in dual-
threat QB Hunter Watson (1,811 passing yards, 647 rushing yards, 17
total TDs). Expect fi reworks on the scoreboard in this one. THE LOOK:
      Over or nothing.

WEEK ZERO – Saturday, August 23

UPSET GAME OF THE WEEK UPSET
      HAWAII over Stanford by 8

Rainbow Warriors boss Timmy Chang welcomes back 18 starters from
last year’s fi ve-win squad — plenty to build on for a coach whose teams have gone 15–7 ATS overall when playing at home. He welcomes the
Cardinal back to the scene of the crime, where he fell to Stanford
37–24 in his fi rst season with the Warriors in 2023. And speaking of
that scene, Chang has cashed six straight times as a home underdog
entering this contest, including a perfect 4–0 ATS last season. Former
NFL head coach and quarterback Frank Reich will be looking to right
a ship that’s been a harbor ghost for four straight seasons — Stanford

has fi nished 3–9 in each of the last four years. With all the off-the-
fi eld distractions swirling around the program — including 20 player
departures via the transfer portal and a head coach scandal that
opened the door for Reich in late March — we see The Tree in trouble
and the Warriors making bowl plans this year. THE CLINCHER: Hawaii
is 11–2 ATS in season-opening games against FBS opponents,
including 9–1 ATS when playing with revenge.
KANSAS over Fresno State by 8

Our second-favorite head coach in the Big 12, Lance Leipold, sat out bowl season last year — same as his star quarterback, Jalon Daniels, who was sidelined with a knee injury. Now back for his senior campaign, the 33-game starter was on a snap count this spring but is on track for Week 1. Daniels started all 12 regular season games last season and closed strong with three straight wins over ranked opponents. He’s been putting in extra work with his wideouts this summer. Yes, he’s been inconsistent — but the arm talent is legit. The real blow came when RB Devin Neal declared for the draft.
Taken in Round 6 by the Saints, Neal posted 1,266 rushing yards and carried Kansas to the No. 3 rushing offense in the Big 12. On the other sideline,first-year head coach Matt Entz inherits a roster ranked No. 112 in Returning Production. However, he’s taking double digits from a Kansas crew that has missed the postseason in 12 of the last 14. We’ll pass on laying lumber with that kind of turnover up top. THE LEAN: Fresno State + points or pass.

      NFL
UPSET GAME OF THE WEEK UPSET
( NOT AN UPSET ANY LONGER! )
      Baltimore over WASHINGTON by 10
If you’re a devoted reader of the PLAYBOOK, you already know where
we’re headed. A glance at the NFL Coaches’ Preseason Records on
page 2 reveals this is the only exhibition matchup on this year’s card
that pits a coach from the Top 3 ATS preseason ledger (John Harbaugh)
against one from the Bottom 3 (Dan Quinn). These same squads met
in the preseason two years ago, when Washington edged Baltimore
29-28, snapping the Ravens’ historic 24-game preseason win streak
with a 47-yard fi eld goal in the final 14 seconds. Yes, Harbaugh
entered the 2025 preseason riding a 1-6-1 ATS skid, but that followed
a scorching 42-12 SU and 39-14-1 ATS run in the preseason — one
of the best in NFL history. If he’s grabbing points we’re snapping the
rubber band, so are we as Harbaugh is 17-8 SU and ATS in his NFL
preseason career as an underdog, including 3-0 SUATS when catching
fewer than 3 points. On the fl ip side, Dan Quinn is a ridiculous 0-5
ATS in second preseason homes games in his career. It’s a matchup
we won’t ignore and we top it off with THE CLINCHER: Washington
head coach Dan Quinn enters the 2025 preseason with a 2-14 SU
and ATS mark in preseason action over his last 16 tries.
