Gracenote
May 10, 2018

The Philadelphia Phillies have been patient with Carlos Santana to begin paying dividends after signing the power-hitting switch hitter to a three-year, $60 million contract in the offseason. Santana has responded to a sluggish start by carrying a six-game hitting streak into Thursday afternoon as the Phillies (21-15) vie for a four-game sweep of the visiting San Francisco Giants (19-18).

Santana has gone deep in each of the first two contests of the series before driving in a career high-tying five runs in Wednesday's 11-3 romp, improving to 9-for-26 with three homers, 12 RBIs and five runs scored during his hitting streak. Maikel Franco had an RBI single in the first inning to push his hitting streak to seven games (12-for-29) before belting the eighth homer of the series for Philadelphia, which improved to 14-5 at Citizens Bank Park. San Francisco's Brandon Belt scored on Evan Longoria's double on Wednesday, marking the sixth time that he has crossed the plate during his last seven games. The Giants' offense has taken a snooze as the club has answered its 33 runs in its previous four games by getting outscored 26-5 in this series.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, Facebook Watch

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Ty Blach (3-3, 3.60 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (2-4, 5.14)

Blach collected his second straight win after allowing two runs (one earned) over a season-high 7 2/3 innings in an 11-2 romp over Atlanta. "It felt good to get out there and feel like I could get deep into the game," the 27-year-old told the San Jose Mercury News. "It's something I take pride in so definitely a big momentum booster there." Blach turned in decidedly differing performances against Philadelphia last season, as he scattered seven hits in a 10-0 shutout on June 2 before getting shredded for six runs on eight hits in a 12-9 setback on Aug. 19.

Velasquez snapped a three-start losing streak and posted his first win since April 7 after giving up only a solo homer over five innings in Saturday's 3-1 triumph at Washington. The homer was the sixth allowed in four outings for the 25-year-old, who also struggled with his control by issuing a season-high four walks. Velasquez pitched well in his lone encounter versus San Francisco, yielding two runs on three hits over five innings in a no-decision on Aug. 4, 2016.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera has reached base in 38 consecutive games, tied with Jimmy Rollins for second place in franchise history.

2. San Francisco RF Andrew McCutchen is 12-for-29 during his nine-game hitting streak.

3. Longoria has recorded five multi-hit performances since April 27.

PREDICTION: Giants 4, Phillies 1

Preview: Red Sox at Yankees
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

The Boston Red Sox used a 17-1 stretch to seize early control of the American League East, but the New York Yankees have utilized an identical surge to take over the top spot. The first-place Yankees look to make it 18 of 19 and complete a three-game sweep of the Red Sox when the American League East rivals meet Thursday in the Bronx.

Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge combined for six hits, six runs and five RBIs, including four on consecutive hits - Gardner's two-run triple and Judge's two-run homer - against Boston closer Craig Kimbrel in an eighth-inning rally that lifted New York to a 9-6 victory Wednesday night. "They're playing good baseball," Kimbrel told reporters of the Yankees, who have won 11 straight at home. "It seems like they're doing all the small things at the right time." New York was 7 1/2 games behind the Red Sox after the action on April 20, but has seized a one-game edge on Boston, which is 8-9 since its 17-1 run. CC Sabathia, who was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in four starts against the Red Sox last year, starts the finale for the Yankees opposite fellow lefty Eduardo Rodriguez.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-0, 5.29 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (2-0, 1.39)

Rodriguez posted three straight quality starts in the middle of April but has given up five runs in each of his last two outings. He struck out 10 in six frames but served up three home runs in his last start Saturday at Texas. The Red Sox are 6-0 in starts made by the Venezuela native, who is 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA in nine starts against the Yankees.

Sabathia is 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA in four starts since coming off the disabled list April 19, including six scoreless innings and a season-high seven strikeouts against Cleveland on Friday. He has lasted four straight starts without allowing a home run and has issued only three walks over his last five outings. The 37-year-old, who is 17-13 with a 4.12 ERA lifetime versus the Red Sox, has controlled matters against Hanley Ramirez (2-for-22), Xander Bogaerts (4-for-28) and Andrew Benintendi (2-for-11).

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox LHP David Price, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday, was diagnosed with a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome and is expected to throw a bullpen session Thursday.

2. Judge is 10-for-19 with two homers and five RBIs against Boston this year.

3. Red Sox 1B Mitch Moreland went deep Wednesday and is 11-for-21 with four homers and eight RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Yankees 6, Red Sox 4

Preview: Royals at Orioles
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

Chris Davis could be finding his home run swing as the last-place Baltimore Orioles go after their third series victory of the season when the Kansas City Royals pay a visit Thursday night for the finale of a three-game set. Davis, who belted 223 homers over the previous six seasons, had struggled in 2018 before launching home runs the last two days - including a three-run blast in the 5-3 victory Wednesday.

Davis, batting .176, hit his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning Wednesday and Mark Trumbo plated a pair of runs with a single in the eighth to snap a 3-3 tie as the Orioles went on to end a seven-game losing streak. Chris Tillman goes after his second victory when he takes the mound for Baltimore on Thursday against fellow right-hander Ian Kennedy, who has been snakebit much of the season. The Royals lost for the fourth time in 11 games Wednesday after going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position - the lone hit being Lucas Duda’s two-run blast in the fourth inning. Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts after knocking in eight runs over the previous two games while teammate Jorge Soler is 6-for-11 across the last three contests and boasts nine RBIs in his past eight outings.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Kansas City, MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (1-3, 2.92 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (1-5, 9.24)

Kennedy gave up six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings last time out without getting a decision in a 4-2 Kansas City victory. The 33-year-old USC product has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his seven starts and owns 35 strikeouts across 37 innings. Manny Machado is 2-for-3 with a double versus Kennedy, who is 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA in four career games against Baltimore and is 10 strikeouts shy of 1,500 overall.

Tillman followed up his best outing of the season by getting pounded for seven runs on seven hits in one-plus inning to take the loss against the Los Angeles Angels last Thursday. The 30-year-old California native had given up one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings to beat Detroit on April 27 for his only win. Moustakas and Salvador Perez are each 6-for-16 with a home run against Tillman, who is 3-3 with a 5.37 ERA in nine games versus the Royals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kansas City LF Alex Gordon is 12-for-28 with three homers over his last seven contests.

2. Baltimore placed RHP Darren O’Day (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and recalled LHP Tanner Scott.

3. Royals OF Abraham Almonte left Wednesday’s game due to illness and his status for Thursday is uncertain.

PREDICTION: Royals 5, Orioles 3

Preview: Mariners at Blue Jays
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

The Toronto Blue Jays responded to being no-hit in the opener against the Seattle Mariners by sleepwalking through much of the following game before erupting for a four-run eighth inning. The Blue Jays (20-17) bid to continue that momentum against the visiting Mariners (20-15) on Thursday when they play the rubber match of the series at Rogers Centre.

Teoscar Hernandez answered a brutal 2-for-19 stretch in his previous five games by belting a solo homer to highlight his three-hit performance in Wednesday's 5-2 victory. Kevin Pillar recorded his fifth multi-hit effort this month for Toronto, which posted just its second win in six outings overall and second in its last seven at home while handing Seattle its fifth loss in its last 14 contests. Jean Segura had an RBI double en route to his third three-hit performance in 10 outings for the Mariners. The 28-year-old Dominican will try to continue that momentum versus Thursday starter J.A. Happ, against whom he is just 1-for-7 in his career.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), Sportsnet One (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Mike Leake (3-3, 6.28 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (4-2, 3.67)

Leake's fast beginning to the season has slowed to a crawl after he answered wins in his first two outings with a 1-3 mark with an 8.70 ERA in his last four starts. The 30-year-old didn't help himself in his last outing with a season high-tying four walks across 5 1/3 innings of a 5-0 setback versus the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Russell Martin is 10-for-32 in his career versus Leake, who carries a lifetime mark of 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA against Toronto

Happ tasted defeat for the first time since Opening Day after permitting a season-high four walks to drive up his pitch count in a 6-2 setback at Tampa Bay. The 35-year-old was taken deep for the seventh time in seven outings this season against the Rays before exiting after 5 2/3 innings. Nelson Cruz is 10-for-22 in his career versus Happ, but the left-hander has kept Andrew Romine (1-for-8) and Mike Zunino (1-for-7) under wraps.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto acquired 3B Giovanny Urshela from Cleveland in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

2. Seattle 2B Robinson Cano is 6-for-33 in his last eight games.

3. Toronto's Lourdes Gurriel is 0-for-7 with two strikeouts since fellow SS Aledmys Diaz went on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

PREDICTION: Mariners 4, Blue Jays 3

Preview: Braves at Marlins
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

The Atlanta Braves are on quite a run away from home as they open a four-game series Thursday against the host Miami Marlins looking to extend their road winning streak to eight games. National League East-leading Atlanta improved to 13-7 on the road Wednesday by capping a two-game interleague sweep of Tampa Bay with a 5-2 victory and has outscored its opponents 41-6 during the seven-game winning streak while allowing fewer than two runs five times in that span.

Nick Markakis, who began Wednesday leading the National League in hits (45) and tied for second in batting average (.333), went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the victory. The Marlins return home following a 2-4 road trip that ended with a thud, as they were outscored 31-9 while being swept in a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs. Miami pitchers were hammered for 40 hits in the series, including seven home runs. Miguel Rojas finished 3-for-5 with a two-run blast in Wednesday’s 13-4 loss, while Brian Anderson is hitting .303 since April 20 after going 1-for-4.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (2-2, 3.65 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Caleb Smith (2-3, 3.67)

Foltynewicz opened the season with a flourish, posting a 2.53 ERA while allowing only nine earned runs in his first six starts. But he began May with an ugly loss to San Francisco at home on Friday, surrendering six runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings – with all of the runs scoring in the second frame. Foltynewicz went 2-1 with a 3.08 ERA in five games (four starts) against Miami a season ago.

Smith struggled in the early going, posting a 6.89 ERA through his first four starts, but has been outstanding in three turns since. The 26-year-old is 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA and a .113 opponents' batting average in his last three outings, recording 26 strikeouts with just two walks and seven hits allowed in 18 2/3 innings. Smith struck out seven and walked one while allowing three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings of a win at Cincinnati on Saturday, five days after striking out nine in seven scoreless frames of a victory over Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami OF Cameron Maybin left Wednesday’s game in the sixth inning with a slight hip injury but is expected to be available for Thursday’s series opener.

2. Atlanta pitchers had a 34 2/3-inning scoreless streak in road games – the longest such run in franchise history – snapped Wednesday with two outs in the eighth inning.

3. The Marlins have been outscored 69-59 at home, as opposed to 121-63 on the road.

PREDICTION: Braves 3, Marlins 2

Preview: Brewers at Rockies
Gracenote
May 9, 2018

Jhoulys Chacín has bounced around since spending his first six major league seasons with the Colorado Rockies, and is now with his fifth different team since the start of 2015. Chacin will be in a familiar spot, however, when he takes the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night in the opener of a 10-game road trip against the Rockies.

Coors Field is not known as a pitcher's haven but Chacin managed to go 23-23 there while making 69 appearances (62 starts) for Colorado. He will try to slow a team that had ripped off six consecutive wins before dropping an 8-0 decision in the second of a two-game interleague series against the Los Angeles Angels. The Rockies had allowed two runs or fewer five times during the six-game run and also saw their franchise-record string of quality starts snapped at nine in Wednesday's loss. Milwaukee, which is in a four-way dogfight for first place in the National League Central, capped a 2-3 homestand with a 6-2 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacín (2-1, 4.08 ERA) vs. Rockies RH German Márquez (2-3, 4.76)

Chacin did not factor in the decision last time out against Pittsburgh despite six strong innings in which he permitted one run on three hits, keeping him unbeaten in his last six starts despite failing to get through five innings in half of them. He has made three starts against his former team, compiling a 1-1 record and 3.31 ERA. Chacin has limited Charlie Blackmon and Trevor Story to a combined 1-for-15.

Marquez halted a two-start skid last time out with a strong performance at the New York Mets, striking out a season-high eight batters and yielding two runs and six hits over six innings. It was the third quality start in the last four outings for the 23-year-old Venezuelan, who is 1-0 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts against Milwaukee. Orlando Arcia is 3-for-5 with a homer, triple and double against Marquez.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers closer Corey Knebel came off the disabled list and gave up a solo homer in his first appearance since April 5.

2. Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado has hit safely in eight of nine games, collecting four homers and nine RBIs in that span.

3. Milwaukee placed LH Wade Miley (oblique) and INF-OF Nick Franklin (quadriceps) on the 10-day DL.

PREDICTION: Rockies 4, Brewers 3

Preview: Nationals at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

The slumping Bryce Harper received a night off to refresh but will be back in the starting lineup when the Washington Nationals visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday for the opener of their four-game series. Harper sat out Wednesday's 2-1 setback against San Diego after matching his career-worst stretch of 19 straight hitless at-bats.

Harper, who is batting just .230, played in each of Washington's first 37 games before manager Dave Martinez broached the idea of a mental day off, which meant no batting practice as well. "I'm a big believer in rest," Martinez told reporters. "I've been wanting to give him a day off. He's just so good. It's hard." Despite Wednesday's loss, the Nationals have won nine of their last 11 games as they enter the series versus the Diamondbacks, who had a three-game winning streak halted with Wednesday's 6-3 road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona star Paul Goldschmidt is mired in a 21-game homerless drought and his bloop RBI-single on Wednesday leaves him 2-for-29 with one RBI in May.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (2-3, 3.65 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (3-2, 4.10)

Roark matched his season high of nine strikeouts in his last turn against Philadelphia but allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss. The 31-year-old has given up six or fewer hits in all seven of his starts while holding opposing batters to a .203 average. Roark is 2-2 with a 3.02 ERA in nine career appearances (six starts) versus Arizona and has fared well against David Peralta (1-for-10).

Greinke settled for a no-decision against Houston in his last turn despite giving up one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old walked a season-worst two batters but has issued just six free passes while striking out 47 in 41 2/3 frames. Greinke has thrived against Washington, posting a 5-1 record and 1.49 ERA in seven career starts, and has kept Harper in the ballpark in a small sample size (1-for-4, two strikeouts, two walks).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks took two of three from the host Nationals from April 27-29.

2. Washington OF/1B Matt Adams is 11-for-29 with seven homers and 14 RBIs this month.

3. Arizona INF Daniel Descalso is 5-for-9 with a homer, three RBIs, three doubles and two walks over his last four games.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 4, Nationals 2

Preview: Twins at Angels
Gracenote
May 9, 2018

Arm injuries limited Garrett Richards to a combined 12 starts and one win over the past two seasons, but he is finally healthy and will take the mound for the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday in the opener of a four-game set against the visiting Minnesota Twins. It's the beginning of an 11-game homestand for Los Angeles, which is only 8-10 at Angel Stadium.

Richards will go for his fifth win for the Angels, who improved to 14-4 on the road and 6-2 in May with an 8-0 victory at Colorado on Wednesday to salvage a split of the two-game interleague series. Justin Upton homered for the second straight day and has four blasts and 12 RBIs in eight games this month for Los Angeles. The Twins had a day off Wednesday but they entered the final leg of their 10-game road trip on a five-game winning streak, scoring 32 runs in that span. "We're playing better in all phases right now," Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said. "We're executing, especially over the last handful of days."

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH José Berríos (3-3, 3.98 ERA) vs. Angels RH Garrett Richards (4-1, 3.93)

Berrios picked up his first win in three weeks last time out at the Chicago White Sox despite allowing four runs over six innings -- the third straight start in which he has allowed at least four runs. The 23-year-old opened the season with a shutout and permitted zero runs and three hits in three of his first four starts. Berrios won his lone career start against the Angels, allowing two runs over six innings.

Richards rebounded from his worst performance with perhaps his best, giving up four hits and striking out eight over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win at Seattle. He was hammered by the Yankees for nine runs in 1 2/3 innings in his previous turn -- the lone dud during a six-start stretch in which he has allowed two runs or fewer five times. Richards is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA in six appearances against Minnesota.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins LF Eddie Rosario has four homers and 13 RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in four straight.

2. Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani will start the series finale against Minnesota.

3. Twins CF Byron Buxton, out since April 12 with a fractured big toe, could return to the lineup Thursday.

Preview: Reds at Dodgers
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

Yasiel Puig made his presence felt in his return to the lineup and looks for a repeat performance when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday for the opener of their four-game series. Puig, who hadn't played since April 28 due to hip and ankle injuries, was activated from the disabled list and went 3-for-4 while scoring twice in Wednesday's 6-3 win over Arizona.

Pinch-hitter Chase Utley delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning to seal the victory for the Dodgers, who had lost three in a row. Cincinnati seeks its first three-game winning streak of the season as it begins a seven-game road trip. The Reds ended a three-game slide with Tuesday's 7-2 victory over the New York Mets and came away with a 2-1 triumph the following day when Adam Duvall led off the bottom of the 10th inning with his sixth homer of the year. Eugenio Suarez recorded one of Cincinnati's five hits on Wednesday to finish 6-for-12 with a home run and five RBIs in the three-game series versus New York.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cincinnati), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Tyler Mahle (2-4, 4.35 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Walker Buehler (2-0, 1.13)

Mahle has allowed three runs or fewer in five of his seven starts this season but has lost two of them - including Saturday's outing against Miami in which he gave up three while serving up two homers among the five hits he yielded in six innings. The 23-year-old Californian did not issue a walk, however, and has given out only 11 free passes while striking out 42 over 39 1/3 frames in 2018. Mahle will be facing Los Angeles for the first time in his brief career.

Buehler's third major-league start on Friday was an historic one, as he recorded eight strikeouts over six innings against San Diego in Mexico in the first combined no-hitter in Dodgers history. The 23-year-old native of Kentucky has given up two runs and 10 hits over 16 frames in his three turns this season but has yet to work more than six innings. Buehler, who has yet to face Cincinnati, scattered four hits over five scoreless frames of a no-decision versus Miami on April 23 in his first career start at Dodger Stadium.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers C Yasmani Grandal went 3-for-7 in the two-game series against Arizona after going hitless in 14 at-bats over his previous six contests.

2. Cincinnati SS Jose Peraza has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and hasn't gone without a hit in back-to-back contests since April 13 and 14.

3. Los Angeles on Wednesday placed LHP Tony Cingrani (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list, recalled LHP Scott Alexander and RHP Brock Stewart from Oklahoma City and optioned RHP Yimi Garcia and OF Alex Verdugo to the Triple-A club.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 6, Reds 1

Preview: Cardinals at Padres
Gracenote
May 10, 2018

Miles Mikolas will pitch at San Diego's Petco Park on Thursday for the first time since he was a member of the Padres in 2012 and 2013. The right-hander is thriving in his return to the major leagues as he takes the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of their four-game series against San Diego.

Mikolas made 27 relief appearances for the Padres before spending part of 2014 with Texas and then pitching in Japan the past three seasons. The 29-year-old received a two-year, $15.5 million contract from the Cardinals over the winter, and the investment has looked good in the early going as Mikolas is sporting a stellar 4-0 record through six starts. St. Louis scored just one run in back-to-back losses to Minnesota after winning its previous five games by a total of six runs. San Diego posted a 2-1 victory over Washington on Wednesday to salvage the finale of the three-game series and is looking for Eric Hosmer to break out of a 2-for-20 funk, although both hits were homers.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Miles Mikolas (4-0, 2.70 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jordan Lyles (0-0, 3.66)

Mikolas defeated the Chicago Cubs in his last turn as he gave up seven hits over seven scoreless innings. A seventh-round pick of the Padres in the 2009 draft, Mikolas hasn't walked a batter in any of his last three turns and has issued just two against 31 strikeouts in 40 frames. "If I throw ball four, there's a 100 percent chance that guy's going to be on first base," Mikolas recently told reporters. "If you make him put it in play, I'll take my chances with those numbers."

Lyles will make his first start of the season after making 13 relief appearances. The 27-year-old is replacing Bryan Mitchell in the rotation after holding opposing batters to a .194 average in 19 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Lyles is 0-1 with a 4.86 ERA in six career appearances (two starts) against St. Louis and has struggled with Dexter Fowler (3-for-6, homer, four walks).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals 3B Jedd Gyorko is a scorching 18-for-36 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in 10 games against the Padres, the team for which he played from 2013-15.

2. St. Louis CF Tommy Pham (groin) is expected back in the lineup after missing the two-game series with Minnesota.

3. San Diego 3B Christian Villanueva is 0-for-25 over his last seven contests after striking out twice in four hitless at-bats on Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Padres 3
