I cashed in the Nationals on the Run Line in a 10-2 victory over the Padres yesterday. I’ll back them on the Run Line as today’s free pick once again for similar reasons. They came into this series motivated after getting swept by the Dodgers over the weekend.
The Nationals once again have a big advantage on the mound in this one. Jeremy Hellickson has been awesome for them, going 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 0.857 WHIP in six starts this season. He is 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two home starts, and 1-0 with a 0.52 ERA in his last three starts overall. One of those came against San Diego on May 8th as he pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings in a 4-0 Washington victory.
Eric Lauer has been crushed all season for the Padres. He is 1-2 with an 8.14 ERA and 2.095 WHIP in five starts this season. Lauer has been at his worst away from home, going 0-1 with a 9.23 ERA and 2.210 WHIP in three road starts.
San Diego is 9-27 in its last 36 games after having won three of its last four games coming in. It is losing in this spot by 2.5 runs per game on average. The Padres are 2-9 in their last 11 vs. NL East opponents. The Nationals are 10-2 in their last 12 games following a win. Bet the Nationals on the Run Line Tuesday.

The Key: I like the price we are getting with the Colorado Rockies as road underdogs to the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight. The Dodgers simply aren’t hitting this season due to injuries and other issues. And Chad Bettis has been a road warrior for the Rockies. Bettis is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 6 road starts this year. He’ll be opposed by Brock Stewart, who is expected to make his first start of the season for the Dodgers due to DL-stint injuries to Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Stewart has faced the Rockies once previously, giving up 9 earned runs and 4 homers in 4 innings of a 2-12 loss in Colorado. I feel the wrong team is favored in this matchup. Take Colorado.

The Cubs Tyler Chatwood has been in shaky form over his last 3 starts which is evidenced by a lofty 1.53 WHIP during that span. He’s be facing an Indians team that has a less than inspiring .245 team batting average in 2018. Nevertheless, Chatwood is a dismal 2-11 in his career team starts when facing an American League team with a cumulative batting average of .265 or less.
The Indians Trevor Bauer has compiled a stellar 2.59 ERA in 9 starts this season. Bauer is coming off a outstanding outing in his last start in which he allowed 0 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 10 and walking none during 8.0 innings pitched. That effort resulted in a 6-0 Indians win over the Tigers. Bauer has faced the Cubs once already this season and allowed 1 earned run on just 4 hits while striking out 8 in 6/2/3 innings of work. Cleveland has lost 4 of their previous 6 games and that’s worth noting. The Indians are 50-17 during the last 3 seasons after losing 4 or 5 of their previous 6 games. Bet the Indians for my free pick on Tuesday 5/22.
Not sure if this had been covered in the months since but ... Blade usually posted a lot of the free plays that had some analysis behind the picks. MLB | Indians vs Cubs

This is a 1* Free Play on the Chicago Cubs (7:05 EST).
I think this one favors the home side in the opener of this interleague series.
The visitors hand the ball to Trevor Bauer (3-3, 2.59 ERA) who comes in off eight scoreless against the anemic Tigers on Wednesday. It’s hard to say anything negative about Bauer, so I won’t bother. I simply feel that he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time tonight.
The home side counters with Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 3.14) who gave up four runs off four hits and two walks with two K’s over 5.1 innings in a no-decision to the Braves on Wednesday. Chatwood hasn’t been perfect this season, but his ERA is solid and note that he’s been at his best at home by going 7-3 with a 2.98 ERA thus far.
I’ll point out additionally that the Cubs are 8-4 (+1.9 units) this year against clubs with losing records, while the Tribe is just 7-15 (-12.4 units) against teams with winning records.
I like Chatwood to continue his strong play at home and for Bauer to come up short in this difficult assignment. Consider the Cubs on Tuesday night.

Three times already this season Brandon McCarthy has squared off against Vincent Velasquez. All three times the Braves and McCarthy have come away victorious. McCarthy has pitched 16 innings while allowing only 4 earned runs for a 2.25 ERA. He is now 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA in six previous starts against the Phillies. Velasquez has pitched 12 2/3 innings while allowing 13 earned runs for a 9.23 ERA. He is now 0-4 with a 4.89 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in seven previous starts against the Braves, still in search of his first victory against them. Velasquez is 2-2 with a 6.10 ERA in four home starts this year. Give me the Braves.

I'll take my chances with the Brewers and Diamondbacks finishing UNDER the mark set here by the books. I just think the price is too good to pass up. These two would have to combine for 10 runs for us to not cash. Arizona is known for their offense, but they are in a major funk right now. The Diamondbacks managed just 2 runs on 3 hits last night and have now scored 2 or fewer runs in 9 of their last 11 games.
Hard to see them getting it going against the red-hot Jhoulys Chacin. After a miserable start to the season, Chacin has been on fire, posting a 2.58 ERA over his last 7 starts. He's got a 2.04 ERA and 1.188 WHIP in 3 home starts and a 1.96 ERA in his last 3 outings. He just recently faced Arizona on the road and held them to 1 run on 2 hits in 7 innings.
One reason the total has been set so high is Diamondback starter Matt Koch just allowed 8 runs in 4 1/3 innings at home to these Brewers in his last start. Koch simply didn't have his best stuff. I like him to bounce back here in a big way. Keep in mind that Koch hadn't allowed more than 3 runs in his previous 5 starts to open the season. Give me the UNDER 9!

The Washington Nationals were swept by the Dodgers over the weekend, but they snapped the three-game slide with a convincing 10-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Monday.
I think this looks like a good spot to back the Nats to record another big win as the Padres send struggling left-hander Eric Lauer (1-2, 8.14 ERA) to the mound. The 22 year old rookie has been tagged with 10 runs on 13 hits with four homers through his last seven innings of work, and he has posted a 9.24 ERA in three starts on the road this season.
The Nats hand the ball to right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.20 ERA). He has allowed just one run through his last three starts, including 6 2/3 scoreless frames against the Padres earlier this month.
