Kerber had a big year in 2016, winning two grand-slam events, while finishing runner-up in another. One of the wins came in the Australian Open, beating Williams in the final. Prior to 2016, she had never made a grand-slam event final.

Pliskova is seeking her first grand-slam title. She has never made it past the third round in four Australian Open appearances, but did reach the US Open final to close out her 2016 season.

Muguruza won the 2016 French Open, her first and only grand-slam title. She has played in the Aussie Open four times, but hasn’t made it past the fourth round.
