Thursday’s Olympics Predictions

Another busy night of Winter Olympics action will take place tonight. Here’s some of our picks for who will win gold.

Men’s Figure Skating

The short program for men’s figure skating begins tonight. According to oddsmakers at YouWager, Shoma Uno of Japan is listed as the favorite to win the gold, as he has +160 odds. Nathan Chen of the USA (+175) and Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan (+225) are other top contenders. Hanyu claimed the 2017 World Championship over Uno by two points, but those two ran away from the pack. Chen is solid, but may have short odds because of support from American bettors. Hanyu is the defending gold medal winner, but it’s awfully tough to repeat in a sport like figure skating. Uno has been closing in over the years and I think he finally breaks through to win it all this weekend. FIGURE SKATING PREDICTION: SHOMA UNO +160

Women’s Snowboard Cross

Another competitive event set for early Friday is the Women’s Snowboard Cross. American Lindsey Jacobellis is the slight favorite at +350, but not far behind are Michela Moioli (+400), Chloe Trespeuch (+500) and Eva Samkova (+500). Samkova is the defending Olympic gold medalist Jacobellis has won the last two world championships after winning a 2006 silver medal in the Olympics. Her last two Olympics saw her fail to reach the medal round and since then she has really stepped up her game. Despite being a veteran in a young-woman’s sport, I like the American to finally grab Olympic gold. SNOWBOARD CROSS PREDICTION: LINDSEY JACOBELLIS +350

Women’s 5000m Speed Skating

A longer race in the speed skating category, Martina Sablivkova of the Czech Republic is favored at -130. Esmee Visser (+325), Claudia Pechstein (+650) and Ivanie Blondin (+650) are the other top contenders. Sablivkova is the defending two-time Olympic champion in this event and she also owns nine world championships in the 5000m. It’s hard to see anyone ending that dominance. With such short odds, I would jump on the champ to repeat again. SPEED SKATING PREDICTION: MARTINA SABLIVKOVA -130
