“Avatar” is a heavy favorite to win Best Picture at the 2010 Academy Awards, but can the underdog “An Education” pull off the upset?
“An Education” is a 2009 British drama based on an autobiography by journalist Lynn Barber. The film was directed by Lone Scherfig and written by Barber and Nick Hornby. It stars Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Thompson, Dominic Cooper, Olivia Williams, Alfred Molina and Rosamund Pike.
The film claims to be a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age.
Along with Best Picture, “An Education” has also been nominated for Best Actress (Carey Mulligan) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby).
Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com has made “An Education” a long shot at +5000 on the money line to win Best Picture at the 82nd Oscars. “Avatar” is –250 to win, while “The Hurt Locker” is +120 and “Up in the Air” is +800.
