Updated PGA Odds
The final major championship of the year, the 2009 PGA Championship is set to begin Thursday, Aug. 13 at Hazeltine in
After opening as a 2/1 favorite to win, Tiger Woods is still the early favorite to win the event, now at 3/2 odds according to the online sports book Sportsbook.com.
Other short odds for the PGA Championship are Padraig Harrington (20/1), Phil Mickelson (22/1), Lee Westwood (28/1), and Hunter Mahan (30/1).
Woods is on a hot streak, winning the Buick Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in the last two weeks. Woods has won 14 of his last 24 events and is a four-time PGA Championship winner, with his most recent coming in 2007. Woods did finish runner up to Rich Beem in the 2002 PGA Championship, which also took place at Hazeltine. Woods has also won at least one major championship each year since 2005, and has yet to win one thus far in 2009.
Harrington tied for second last weekend in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and is the defending PGA Championship winner. Harrington changed his swing following the 2008 season where he won the final two majors, but the results did not continue. Harrington has missed eight cuts this year and missed five-straight cuts prior to the British Open. His runner-up finish last weekend was just his second top five of the year in 18 events.
Mickelson missed the British Open to be with his wife, who is recovering from breast cancer surgery. Mickelson did return last week for the Bridgestone Invitational, where he finished tied for 58th. In this year’s majors, Mickelson has placed fifth (Masters) and tied for second (U.S. Open). Mickelson is the 2005 PGA Championship winner, and finished seventh in last year’s event.
Westwood had four-straight top 10 finishes heading into this week’s PGA Championship. Westwood finished third at the British Open, but held the lead on the final day by two strokes at one point. Westwood has made the cut in 15-of-16 events this year.
Aside from missing the cut at the British Open, Mahan has finished sixth or better in his last four events. The British Open was the only cut Mahan has missed this year. Mahan has 10 top 20 finishes in 2009.
