Mike Gundy has the Oklahoma State Cowboys thinking big things in 2009, especially after a decent ’08 campaign. But is OK State a legit national title contender?

The Cowboys wrapped up the 2008 season with a 9-4 overall record, including a 5-3 mark in the Big 12. OK State capped the season with a 42-31 loss to Oregon in the 2009 Holiday Bowl.

The ‘Boys will welcome back one of the better overall players in the Big 12 in quarterback Zac Robinson, who threw for 3,064 yards for an explosive OK State offense last year. Robinson won’t have to do it all alone, as dynamic running back Kendall Hunter (1,555 rushing yards) and wide receiver Dez Bryant (1,480 receiving yards) also return.

Defensively, OK State welcomes back linebackers Andre Sexton and Patrick Lavine, defensive end Jeremiah Price, and cornerback Perrish Cox. Sexton racked up 100 tackles last season, while Price finished with three sacks.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Oklahoma State 40/1 long shots to win the 2010 National Championship. The Cowboys are an intriguing team to watch out for, however, because they have an outstanding offense that can score on any defense on any given Saturday.

That said, their defense was atrocious at times last year, especially against the best of the Big 12, including Oklahoma and Texas. Still, a win over Georgia in the opening week could give the Cowboys a ton of confidence throughout the rest of the season and this team could very well be undefeated when it plays Texas at the end of October. And with that much momentum, anything can happen.
