Michigan vs Rutgers Prediction October 31 - Will We See an Upset? Michigan vs Rutgers Prediction October 31 - Will We See an Upset?

Michigan hits the road for a Halloween noon kickoff at Rutgers needing a spark after three losses by a touchdown or less. The Wolverines are 16-point favorites, up from an opening number of 14, and the total has slid from 48 to 45.5. Rutgers will be without starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan, which explains much of that movement. Below, we break down the Michigan vs. Rutgers spread, total, and where the number looks too big or too small, with our best bet on each.

Michigan vs. Rutgers Betting Preview

Michigan enters at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play. The defense has carried the team. It has not allowed more than 20 points in any game this season. The offense is another story. Michigan is averaging about 20 points per game, and that drops to 15 per game in conference play. Its three losses came by a combined 14 points: 20-19 to Iowa, 20-14 at Minnesota, and 13-6 in overtime to Indiana last Saturday.

The quarterback position is the biggest question in Ann Arbor. Head coach Kyle Whittingham benched Bryce Underwood at halftime of the 21-18 win over Penn State, and true freshman Tommy Carr started against Indiana. Multiple outlets report Carr is expected to start again at Rutgers. However, Whittingham had not publicly named a starter as of midweek. Carr went 20-of-32 for 167 yards with an interception against the Hoosiers.

Rutgers sits at 2-5 and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Its lone conference win came 37-30 at Maryland, and it was routed 42-14 at Northwestern last week. The bigger blow came during that game. Lonergan is out against Michigan after being knocked out in the first quarter. AJ Surace and Sean Ashenfelder combined to go 9-of-27 in relief. Top receiver KJ Duff (45 catches, 774 yards, nine touchdowns) is listed as doubtful. Defensive backs Kaj Sanders and Zahmir Dawud are out.

Michigan has its own injury questions. Safeties Rod Moore and Jordan Young, plus defensive linemen Dom Nichols and Enow Etta, are listed as questionable. History favors the Wolverines, who lead the series 9-1 and won the last meeting 31-7 in 2023.

Michigan vs. Rutgers Prediction — Can a Stalled Offense Win by Three Scores?

The case for Michigan is simple. Rutgers is starting a backup quarterback who struggled badly in relief last week. It may also be without its best receiver. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Knights are allowing more than 33 points per game. Michigan’s defense should control this matchup, and short fields from turnovers could hand the offense easy points. The market agrees. The spread has climbed two points since opening, even though 57 percent of spread bets are on Rutgers.

Still, laying this many points requires trusting an offense that has not earned it. Michigan has topped 21 points just once this season, in a 52-17 rout of UTEP. In four Big Ten games, it has scored 21, 19, 14, and 6. A freshman quarterback making his second start, in a run-first approach, tends to shorten games and keep margins tight. A 20-6 or 23-10 Michigan win fits the profile, and neither covers.

The risk is that Rutgers’ offense collapses entirely and Michigan’s defense scores or sets up multiple short touchdowns. That is a real path. However, the number has moved past where Michigan’s scoring output supports it. We will take the points with the home underdog.

The Pick: Rutgers +16.0 (-112)

Michigan vs. Rutgers Prediction — Has the Total Dropped Far Enough?

Michigan games have been low-scoring all season. Only one of its seven games, the UTEP blowout, has cleared 45 combined points. Its last two games finished with 39 and 19 total points. Now the Wolverines face an opponent playing a backup quarterback and possibly missing its top target. That combination points to long, clock-draining Michigan drives and short Rutgers possessions.

On the other side, the Rutgers defense has been leaky, and Michigan could find more room to run than it has against Big Ten defenses. A defensive or special teams score could also push the total. Even so, the total already dropped from 48 and remains above what Michigan’s games have typically produced. Our projection lands in the low 30s.

The Pick: Under 45.5 (-115)

Final Thoughts and Bonus Angle

There is no bonus play worth forcing here. Michigan at -675 carries an implied win probability of about 87 percent. That reflects the matchup fairly, but it offers little return for the risk. Rutgers at +475 would need its backup quarterback to outplay a defense that has not allowed more than 20 points all season. Neither moneyline stands out as value.

The two picks work together. If Michigan’s offense continues to sputter, both the Rutgers cover and the Under are in play. The scenario that beats both is a Michigan breakout, so watch the quarterback situation and the injury report up to kickoff. Here is a summary of our picks:

  • Rutgers +16.0 (-112)
  • Under 45.5 (-115)
