Iowa arrives with the most punishing defense in the country. Kirk Ferentz’s 28th team has allowed 13 points in three games, shutting out Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa and surviving Iowa State 16-13 at Kinnick Stadium. The offense is the open question. Auburn transfer Hank Brown won the job outright this week, with Iowa removing the “OR” from its Week 4 depth chart. Michigan is 3-0 in Kyle Whittingham’s first season after 35 years at Utah, though the results have been uneven. The Wolverines beat Western Michigan 13-12 on a last-second Hail Mary, then knocked off then-No. 11 Oklahoma 17-10 in the best win either team owns. A 52-17 rout of UTEP followed, but Michigan led by only three at halftime. Sophomore Bryce Underwood has started all three games. The defense is the constant, allowing 220.0 yards per game, 10th nationally, and 39 points total.

Neither offense pushes tempo, and Iowa’s defense is surrendering 4.3 points per contest.
The counterargument is that the number has absorbed most of that already. Michigan hung 52 on UTEP and Iowa put 40 on Northern Illinois, so neither is incapable of a scoring afternoon. One non-offensive touchdown plus a handful of ordinary drives clears 38, so the margin for error is thin. Still, the matchup keeps pointing one way.
