Clemson’s season opened with a 51-10 loss at LSU, a game we previewed in our season-opening Clemson vs. LSU breakdown. Dabo Swinney’s team has won two straight since, beating Georgia Southern 22-7 and North Carolina 28-20. Against North Carolina, Clemson fell behind by double digits early, then scored the final 13 points after a fourth-quarter lightning delay of nearly two and a half hours.
Christopher Vizzina started the first two games but left the Georgia Southern game early with an elbow injury. Swinney then named Tait Reynolds the starter, making him the earliest freshman to start at quarterback for Clemson in more than 50 years. Reynolds went 20-of-29 for 215 yards, a touchdown and an interception in his first start. Vizzina is listed as probable, but Reynolds gets the call again Friday.
Defensive end Will Heldt leads the pass rush with four sacks. However, Clemson will be without starting nickel back Corian Gipson and defensive tackle Devarrick Woods. Both were ruled out on Wednesday’s availability report.
California is also 2-1 in its first season under head coach Tosh Lupoi. The opener was a 45-24 home loss to UCLA, covered in our UCLA vs. California opener breakdown, and UCLA pulled away late in that one. Since then, California won 21-18 at Syracuse and routed FCS Wagner 49-7. Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns against Wagner. He has not thrown an interception since the opener. On defense, safety Kingston Lopa leads the nation with five interceptions.
The only previous meeting came in the 1992 Citrus Bowl, a 37-13 California win.

The case against California is real. California has allowed 5.3 yards per carry, and Gideon Davidson just ran for 105 yards against North Carolina. If Clemson controls the ground game, it can shorten the game and protect its young quarterback. California’s only FBS win also came by three points at Syracuse. Even so, price matters most. A home team catching points in a near coin-flip game, against a freshman quarterback making a cross-country trip, is the side we would rather hold.

The total opened at 50.5 and has ticked up to 51. The over has a clear path. California’s passing volume could stress a Clemson secondary playing without a starter, and Clemson allowed 51 points at LSU. Sagapolutele has also already posted a 413-yard game this season.
However, the scoring profiles point lower. Clemson has scored 10, 22 and 28 points, and it now leans on a freshman quarterback making his second start. California scored 24 and 21 in its two FBS games, with the 49-point output coming against an FCS opponent. Both teams are also on a short week after Saturday games. Clemson’s week was squeezed further by the lightning delay against North Carolina. A game settled in the 40s fits both offenses better than a shootout.
