New England Patriots will meet Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl LX. This is a repeat of Super Bowl XLIX which was played in 2015 and won by New England. The Patriots went on to participate in the three of the next four Super Bowls, winning two of them as they dominated in the NFL. The question is, can Drake Maye guide the Patriots to another dynasty?

The New Belichick and Brady

When the Patriots were successful between 2001 and 2019, the coaching and quarterback duo of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady was crucial. Brady appeared in ten Super Bowl games and all but one was for the Patriots. Between 2001 and 2018, Brady played in nine Super Bowl games for the Patriots and won six times. It is an incredible record and during that period, when the NFL odds were released for the Super Bowl, the Patriots were regularly listed as favourites.

As we approach Super Bowl LX, the Patriots are the outsiders in the NFL betting odds, but could Maye be the quarterback to upset the Seahawks on the big occasion?

Maye at the Forefront of New Era

Prior to this season, the Patriots had failed to make it beyond the Wild Card round since 2018. The fact they have gone all the way to the Super Bowl shows the combination of head coach and quarterback is working. Following the win over Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game, Maye said, โ€œItโ€™s a new team, itโ€™s a new eraโ€. This comment seems to be in reference to the comparison between the current Patriots team and the one of Belicheck and Brady.

Interestingly, Brady was 24 when played in his first Super Bowl for the Patriots and Maye is 23, so things are even when it comes to their age in that respect. Maye was the man to make the difference for the Patriots in the AFC Championship game against the Broncos, scoring the Patriotsโ€™ only touchdown in the 10-6 victory. It was Brady who inspired the Patriots to the Super Bowl in the 2001 season thanks to his performance in the AFC Championship game against Oakland Raiders.

There is no doubt Maye is at the forefront of a new era in New England. However, there is a difference between taking the patriots to the Super Bowl once and doing it consistently, over a long period.

A Stunning Return to the Spotlight

We must remember the Patriots won only 4 games last season, so this season has seen a remarkable turnaround in results. Another interesting statistic is that Maye is the first quarterback in NFL history to win three playoff games against teams with a top five record for total defences. That shows Maye is a quarterback who can pick apart strong defences which is something the Patriots must do to beat the Seahawks. In terms of the stats this season, Maye has a total EPA and EPA/per play of over 200. He joins the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Patrick Mahomes to have achieved that feat. Maye also looks the part and the way he operates in tight spaces is reminiscent of Bradyโ€™s ability in the pocket. In addition, Maye won a playoff game in Denver, something Brady never achieved.

To come even close to the dynasty of the Patriots with Brady at the helm would be a monumental achievement for Maye. However, there is no doubt he is showing signs of the ability required take a team to the Super Bowl on multiple occasions.
