TUSCALOOSA, AL (The Spread) – After it was leapfrogged by Oregon in the polls, No. 3 Alabama looks to send a message to college football pundits today when it hosts Southern Miss at 6:00PM ET.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Alabama is a 45.5-point home favorite over Southern Miss while the total is currently sitting at 56 points. The Crimson Tide opened as 49-point favorites but the line has been bet down, while the total opened at 57 and has been bet down as well.
Southern Miss had issues with I-AA Alcorn State last week but eventually hung on for a 26-20 victory as a 14.5-point home favorite. The combined score fell well under the total of 61 points as quarterback Nick Mullens completed 21-of-33 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Ito Smith also added 118 yards on 32 carries while the Golden Eagle defense forced four turnovers.
The Crimson Tide cruised to a 41-0 victory against Florida Atlantic last week, although ‘Bama failed to cover as a massive 42-point favorite. Quarterback Blake Sims completed 11-of-13 passes for 214 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions, while fellow signal-caller Jake Coker threw for 202 yards on 15-of-24 passes with one TD. Coach Nick Saban seems content in keeping his quarterback options open, although one would think that both Sims and Coker will spend time under center again today.

According to latest college football trends, the over is 4-1 in the Golden Eagles’ last five games following a straight up win, 4-1 in their last five games versus a team with a winning record and 13-4 in their last 17 road games overall. On the other side, the over is 10-2 in the Crimson Tide’s last 12 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in its previous game and 8-1-2 in its last 11 games after scoring more than 40 points in its previous game.
