ARLINGTON, TX (The Spread) – The San Francisco 49ers face a tough road test to open the season, as they face the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25PM ET on FOX.
San Francisco is coming off a 12-4 season in 2013 in which it reached the NFC Championship Game. Dallas was 8-8 last season, missing out on the playoffs. Dallas has won three straight over San Francisco.
Trends show that these two have hit the over in their last six meetings. San Francisco is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 road games while Dallas is just 2-5 against the spread in its last 7 conference games.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, San Francisco is the favorite on the road, as the 49ers have odds of -4.5 points at Dallas. The over/under total for the game has been set at 51.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had San Francisco favored by 3.5 points. The spread climbed to a peak of 5.5 points before dropping back to 4.5. The over/under total opened at 48.5 points, but climbed to a peak of 52 before settling in at 51.5.
The 49ers have built their foundation on a physical defense that is among the best in the NFL. Last season, San Francisco ranked fourth in the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed and seventh in fewest passing yards given up. The team took a hit this offseason, with linebacker Aldon Smith getting suspended for the first 10 games of the season. Offensively, San Francisco had the third-best rush attack in the NFL in 2013. That is due in part to mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but the team also has a stable of running backs to use this year, led by Frank Gore and rookie Carlos Hyde.
Dallas comes into this season needing to desperately improve its defense. The Cowboys gave up over 400 yards per game last year and ranked 30th in the NFL in passing defense and 27th in rushing defense. That put a lot of pressure on Tony Romo and the offense to carry the team. Romo threw for 3,828 yards and 31 touchdowns with Dez Bryant emerging as a star last season, catching 93 passes for 1,233 yards and 13 scores. Demarco Murray also emerged as a standout back, rushing for 1,121 yards and nine touchdowns.
In terms of Injuries, Dallas defensive end George Selvie (shoulder) is questionable for the game while defensive end Anthony Spencer (knee) is out. San Francisco receiver Michael Crabtree (calf) is listed as questionable while tackle Anthony Davis (hamstring) is questionable as well.
