The Jets were 8-8 last season and some expected Rex Ryan to lose his job, but he is back as head coach. The Raiders went 4-12 last season and return Dennis Allen as the head coach of the franchise. The home team has won five of the last six between these two.

Trends show that the home team is 6-1-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings between these two. The Raiders are also 0-5 against the spread in their last 5 conference games while the Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

According to oddsmakers from BetDSI, New York is the favorite at home, as the Jets have point spread odds of -5.5 against the Raiders. The over/under total for the game has been set at 40 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had New York favored by 4.5 points. The spread hit a low of 4 during the week before reaching its peak of 5.5. The over/under total opened at 40 points and bounced back and forth between that and 39.5 points.

Coming off the 8-8 season, the Jets have some high hopes for a playoff push this season. Geno Smith is coming into his second season at quarterback. Should he struggle, the Jets signed Michael Vick to step in. The Jets also added Chris Johnson to the backfield to improve the run game, which already ranked sixth in the NFL last season. On the other side, the Jets were third in the league in run defense in 2013, allowing just 88.3 yards per game.

The Raiders aren’t expected to be too great this season. The team already made a surprising move, giving rookie Derek Carr the ball at quarterback. The team added Matt Schaub in the offseason, but elected to go with Carr over the veteran. One place Oakland could improve is in the run game, as the team added Maurice Jones-Drew to join Darren McFadden. The defense will need to step up a lot. The unit ranked 28th in the NFL in passing yards allowed at 255.8 per game. Leading the defense will be Nick Roach, who had 112 tackles, 5.5 sacks and four forced fumbles a year ago.
