The main event of Saturday’s card is for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Championship with Josh Barnett (31-5) taking on Daniel Cormier (9-0). According to oddsmakers, Barnett is a slight favorite to win this contest, as he has a money line of -120, while Cormier has odds of -110 to prevail. Barnett has the experience edge and is a great wrestler and submission fighter while Cormier is relatively young to the sport, but also had a lot of wrestling ability. This fight could come down to whoever has the better wrestling, or which fighter has the better striking.
The co-main event of the night is a Strikeforce Lightweight Championship contest with the champion, Gilbert Melendez (20-2) taking on Josh Thomson (19-4) for the third time. According to oddsmakers, Melendez is the favorite to win this bout, as he has a money line of -475 to win, while Thomson has odds of +375 to win. These two have split a pair of unanimous decisions in their previous two meetings. Thomson won the first bout while Melendez won the second contest. Melendez has been on a roll since the loss to Thomson, winning his last six. Thomson has won just three of his last four. Melendez is considered the more evolved fighter, but Thomson has some solid all-around ability and is capable of winning the fight.
