Belgium’s Philippe Gilbert won Stage 1 of the 2011 Tour de France, which started at the Passage du Gois and wrapped up at the Mont des Alouettes, while Garmin-Cervelo won the Team Time Trial in Stage 2. United States’ Tyler Farrar won Stage 3 (Olonne-sur-Mer to Redon) and Stage 4 will begin on July 5.
Gilbert was actually favored to win Stage 1, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him emerge victorious. He successfully countered Fabian Cancellara on the uphill finish and finished three seconds ahead of Cadel Evans, who finished by a similar margin of the chasing group.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have revised their odds and Contador is now an 11/10 favorite, while Andy Schleck is 6/5. Cadel Evans is 8/1, while Bradley Wiggins is 22/1 and Ivan Basso and Robert Gesink are 25/1, respectively. Gilbert and Farrar aren’t even listed in the revised odds.
Entering the race, Contador opened as an 8/13 favorite, while Schleck was 2/1 and Evans was 25/1. Basso opened at 25/1, Wiggins was 28/1 and Robert Gesink was 28/1.
