(The Spread) – The 2011 Tour de France will kickoff in early July and Alberto Contador has opened as the favorite to win this year’s 98th running.

This year’s Tour de France will start on July 2 with a 180km 1st stage run in Passage du Gois and will wrap up on July 24 with the Champs-Elysees. The total distance for the 2011 Tour de France will be 3,430.5km, or 2,132 miles long.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador the opening favorite with 8/13 odds. The 28-year-old has won the last two Tours and three of the last four overall. Carlos Sastre, who won the Tour in 2008, is a long shot to win this year’s event at 125/1 odds.

Andy Schleck is next in line behind Contador with 2/1 odds to win this year’s Tour de France, while Cadel Evans and Ivan Basso are 25/1, respectively. Bradley Wiggins and Robert Gesink are each 28/1, respectively, while Frank Schleck and Samuel Sanchez are 33/1 to win, respectively. Jurgen Van Den Broeck (50/1) and Jani Brajkovic (66/1) round out the rest of the top 10 in terms of odds to win.

Looking at the history of the Tour de France, American Lance Armstrong has won the most tours with a record of seven victories (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005). Next up is Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and Eddy Merckx, who each have five Tour wins apiece. Contador is listed in the same company as Louison Bobet, Greg LeMond and Philippe Thys on the all-time list with three wins apiece.
