Soldat Kentucky Derby Odds
(The Spread) – If 2011 Kentucky Derby long shot Soldat is to surprise the field at Churchill Downs this Saturday, he’ll have to overcome a bad post draw.

Odds: Earlier this week, oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com listed Soldat at +1800 on the money line, while Dialed In was the favorite at +350. Both of these contenders’ odds have changed, however, as Soldat is now +1200 on the ML and Dialed in is +300.
Race History: Soldat had a rough go of things at the Florida Derby (Grade 1), finishing fifth behind Dialed In (among others). But he did win the Fountain of Youth (grade 2) on February 26 and an Allowance on January 21. In 2010, he also finished no lower than second in any of the five outings he ran in (which includes a second place showing at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile).
Post Position: As we mentioned in the opening, if Soldat is going to win this weekend he’ll have to overcome long odds. And we’re not referring to the odds that oddsmakers have given him either. No horse has ever come out of the No. 17 gate and won the Kentucky Derby. It’s one of two post positions (the No. 19 being the other one) that have never produced a winner.
Outlook: Despite his showing at the Florida Derby, this is a horse that has run well over his career. Granted, his post position draw was unfortunate but that doesn’t mean that he won’t finish in the money and be one of the sleepers to watch for leading up to the Saturday’s race.
