EL PASO, TX (TheSpread) – Two storied college football programs collide in the 2010 Sun Bowl on Friday as Notre Dame squares off with Miami.

Notre Dame is 7-5 on the year and 5-4-3 against the point spread odds while Miami is 7-5 on the season and 5-7 against the spread. The two teams have combined to go under the point total in 16 of 23 lined games this season. Trends show that Notre Dame is just 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 bowl games while Miami is just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 bowl games.

Opening odds had Miami favored by 3 points. The spread held strong until dropping to 2.5 late this week. The over/under total opened at 46 points and has since added a point to get to 47.

Notre Dame struggled early in the first year of new head coach, Brian Kelly, as they started 1-3 and were event 4-5 at one point before closing the season on a three-game winning streak by beating teams like USC and Utah. The Irish are averaging 25.8 points per game and allowing 20.5 points per contest. Despite a lot of key injuries, Notre Dame managed its winning streak behind the play of freshman quarterback Tommy Rees, who has thrown for 905 yards and 10 touchdowns with eight interceptions in six games of action.

Miami lost its last two games of the season and decided to fire coach Randy Shannon as a result. The Hurricanes lost three games at home this season. On the year, Miami averaged 27.1 points per game on offense and gave up 19.7 points per game on defense. The Hurricanes have had a strong rushing attack, averaging 190.4 yards per game on the ground, but they also have given up 170.8 rushing yards per game. Damien Berry and Lamar Miller have led the team with a combined 1,444 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

In terms of injuries, Miami quarterback Jacory Harris is probable for the game despite dealing with a concussion late in the season. Notre Dame safety Dan McCarthy is considered doubtful for the game with a shoulder injury.
