Gene Chizik gave
Auburn fans some hope last season after guiding the Tigers to an 8-5 record. In 2010, can

Auburn
make a run for the BCS National Championship?

Chizik was heavily criticized when hired at

Auburn
but a 5-0 start quickly ended that. Still, the Tigers went on to win just three of their last eight games.

This season,

Auburn
brings back 15 starts, seven of which are on offense. The issue is,

Auburn
has to replace its quarterback and leading rusher. Cameron Newton is expected to start at quarterback this season while Mario Fannin will handle the carrying duties. Darvin Adams is back at receiver after catching 60 passes for 997 yards and 10 touchdowns, which earned him All-SEC status.

The offensive line returns all but one starter, so

Newton
and Fannin should be able to get some nice protection and running holes for the offense.

On defense, the Tigers have eight starters back including the linebacking corp. Josh Bynes leads the way after picking up 104 tackles last season.

Auburn
has two members of the secondary back, but does lose Walter McFadden, who had six interceptions in 2009 to lead the team.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com currently list

Auburn
as 50/1 long shots to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Tigers are also given 8/1 odds to win the SEC and 5/1 odds to win the SEC West.

Auburn
has a favorable schedule this season with just four road games. The lone road challenge comes in

Alabama
to end the season. With eight games at home, Auburn shouldn’t have much trouble getting a bowl bid and contending for the SEC West, but the Tigers still have a long ways to go before it can be a 1-loss or unbeaten team.
