Jahvid Best is a Heisman candidate at running back for the Golden Bears after rushing for 1,580 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2008. Best averaged 8.1 yards per-carry on the season to lead the Bears to a 9-4 record. Jeff Tedford is in his eighth year as head coach of

Cal, and he brings back 17 starters to the field in 2009. With Best and 16 other starters back, the Golden Bears are hopeful to win the PAC 10 and reach the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1958. Junior Kevin Riley will starter at quarterback after sharing time at the position in 2008. Riley threw for 1,360 yards and 14 touchdowns during the year. Riley threw for 423 yards in a 35-27 loss to the Terrapins last year. The Bears have two All-PAC 10 players back on defense in defensive tackle Tyson Alualu and cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson. Thompson had 70 tackles, for interceptions, and 14 pass deflections in 2008.

Maryland was 8-5 in 2008 in Ralph Friedgen’s eighth season as coach. The Terrapins lost 30 seniors from last season, but bring back senior quarterback Chris Turner, who threw for 2,516 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2008. Maryland brings back leading tackler Alex Wujciak, who tallied 133 tackles and seven tackles for loss in 2008. Also back is safety Jamari McCollough, who had four interceptions in 2008.
