LONDON, England (TheSpread) – The Women’s Basketball event at the 2012 Olympics is down to its final 8 teams. Here is an updated look at the odds to win gold.
According to oddsmakers, the United States is hands down the favorite, as they have 1/20 odds to win the gold medal, while other short odds to win are Australia (10/1) and Russia (16/1).
The U.S. went 5-0 in pool play, rolling through their opponents by an overall margin of +183 points. The Americans failed to win any game by less than 25 points. The U.S. opens quarterfinal action against Canada.
Australia actually suffered a loss to France in pool play, going 4-1 with a point differential of +31. The Aussies lost 74-70 to France in OT, but bounced back to win their final three games. Australia will meet China in the quarterfinals.
Russia went just 3-2 in pool play, losing to Australia 70-66 and to France 65-54. Still, Russia had a +6 in point differential. Russia will face Turkey in the quarterfinals and then have a potential rematch with France in the semifinals.
