According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, Steelers’ running back Rashard Mendenhall is 5/1 to be the first player to reach paydirt in Super Bowl 45.

The Packer most likely to score the first touchdown according to oddsmakers is receiver Greg Jennings, who is 13/2. Steelers’ wideout Mike Wallace is right behind him at 15/2, while Green Bay running back James Starks is 17/2.

In the AFC Conference Championship Game, Mendenhall scored first on a one-yard run midway through the first quarter. Mendenhall was also the first Steeler to cross the goal line in the Divisional Round against the Ravens, so it’s easy to see why he would be favored to reach the end zone first in the Super Bowl.

In the NFC title game, it was quarterback Aaron Rodgers who scored first for Green Bay, so his 14/1 odds to score first in the Super Bowl may represent some value. In the Divisional Round, the Falcon scored first against Green Bay but against the Eagles, receiver Tom Crabtree was the first to cross the goal line in the Wild Card Round.

In the past couple of Super Bowls, it’s been a variety of positions that have reached paydirt first. In the past six Super Bowls, running backs have scored twice, quarterbacks have scored once, receivers have scored once, tight ends have scored once and kick returns have scored once. So there may not be any value in taking a running back, which is why players like Hines Ward (12/1), Heath Miller (12/1) and Donald Driver (12/1) need to be considered.
