NEW YORK (AP) -Casey Stengel's 1951 World Series ring, the Hall of Fame manager's lone season with both Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle in the Yankees' lineup, sold for $180,000 at SCP Auctions and sports memorabilia sale.
A New York private collector bought the ring Tuesday. Stengel's 1969 New York Mets World Series ring, bestowed upon him by the team's players in honor of their former manager, went to a New York private collector for $78,000, and his 1957 Yankees AL championship gold cufflinks were sold for $72,000.
Willis Reed's New York Knicks jersey from his dramatic comeback in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA finals went for $90,000.
Lou Gehrig's 1931 Yankees home jersey, expected to go for about $300,000, wasn't sold. It was returned to the owner after the bidding stopped at $160,000.
Overall, the auction titled SCP Auctions and Sotheby's sale of Important Sports Memorabilia and Cards, brought in $4,732,560.
