Sabathia, Yanks in tight spot against Red Sox
The events of this weekend have effectively removed the Yankees from the playoff conversation. Yet the last thing they want is to leave Beantown on a four-game losing streak.
New York attempts to salvage the finale of its series vs. archrival Boston tonight, with an 8:05 p.m. ET first pitch at Fenway Park. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI prefer the host team, though, whereas the Bronx Bombers represent +167 underdogs. The over/under run figure holds steady at 9.5.
Tasked with reviving the visitors’ confidence, CC Sabathia must reverse a poor track record against the Red Sox. The veteran lefty holds a 12-13 record with a 4.54 ERA in 33 career meetings with them. Most recently, he held the first-place Dodgers scoreless through 6 ½ innings.
John Farrell counters with Drew Pomeranz, he of the 10-12 mark with a 1.18 WHIP. The 27-year-old has already faced the Yanks twice in 2016, only to receive a pair of no-decisions. Current hitters in the pinstripes are only batting a combined .211 off Pomeranz.

Intuition tells us that a team that entered this set with a pretty decent road output won’t put up yet another dud. Of course, Boston’s eager to keep building that advantage in the American League East. Give the slightest edge to the wily Sabathia.
