Rays unable to rally back
Tampa Bay scored one run in the bottom of the eighth and two in the ninth but it was not enough Wednesday afternoon in a 4-3 home loss to Toronto. Brendan McKay took the loss as he gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk over five innings. Mike Zunino helped pace the Rays offense as he finished 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Austin Meadows went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Kevin Kiermaier was also 2-for-4 and scored a run. Jalen Beeks will start tonight as he enters with a 5-1 record, 3.77 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 61 strikeouts over 76 1/3 innings pitched.
Mariners snap five-game skid
Seattle posted a 3-2 home win over San Diego Wednesday afternoon to improve to 48-68 overall and 27-33 at home. Kyle Seager helped lead the Mariners offense as he went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Mallex Smith ended the game 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Tom Murphy finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Matt Magill picked the win in relief as he gave up one hit with two strikeouts in one inning of relief. Anthony Bass earned run save as he allowed one hit with no strikeouts or walks in an inning of work. Marco Gonzales draws the start as he comes in with a 12-9 record, 4.32 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 101 strikeouts over 139 2/3 innings pitched.
MLB Betting Trends
Tampa Bay
The Rays are 4-0 in their last four road games. Tampa Bay is 21-9 in its last 30 games versus the AL West.
Seattle
The Mariners are 6-1 in their last seven home games. Seattle is 7-3 in the last 10 Gonzales starts.
Prediction:
Tampa Bay has had success against AL West opponents and is the better team here by a longshot, but the long travel against a pitcher who is usually fairly effficient gives me pause. I’m definitely leaning towards Seattle in the opener as Beeks has slowed down lately. While strong pitchers have had the Mariners’ number, I think they do enough tonight to register the win.
