MLB FREE PICK: Take Baltimore. According to latest MLB trends, Boston is: 3-7 in Doubront’s last 10 starts during game 1 of a series and 8-21 last 29 road games vs. a team with a winning record. Baltimore is: 19-7 last 26 in series, 5-1 last 6 at home in series, 20-8 last 28 Thursday games, 11-4 last 15 on grass and 38-13 last 51 following a loss.
Baltimore won two of three in this series in early April and has won seven of the last nine. Felix Doubront (4-3, 4.84 ERA) takes on rookie Kevin Gausman (0-3, 8.84 ERA). Doubront is 0-2 with a 3.13 ERA in six appearances and three starts vs. Baltimore. He is basically a six-inning pitcher, though he hasn’t allowed over three runs since May 3, when he gave up six in 3 2/3 innings at Texas. Gausman has struggled on the road, but his one home start was outstanding. He allowed just one run in six innings against Detroit as the Orioles won 4-2, but he received a no-decision. Gausman has great stuff as the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft and appears to be more comfortable at home. Boston could be fatigued after a tough series against Tampa Bay, which included a 14-inning win on Monday. Baltimore is a very patient team that will settle for walks and Doubront has struggled with his command this year, issuing 31 walks in 61 1/3 innings. That’s not a good combination against a team that averages 4.97 runs per game. The Red Sox travel to Camden Yards to take on Baltimore in Game 1 of their series at 7:05pmET on Thursday night.
