Samardzija allowed just five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over eight scoreless innings in a no-decision Saturday in St. Louis. Samardzija and Carlos Martinez matched donuts all night in a game which remained scoreless through 12 innings. After a horrendous first four starts when he posted an 0-4 record and 7.40 ERA the right-hander has turned things around. He has four quality starts over the past five outings with a 1-1 record and 2.70 ERA over the past five outings. He also has zero walks and 36 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings in four May starts. Butler lasted just three innings in Friday’s start against the Brewers, surrendering two runs on three hits and five walks. The right-hander struck out three on the afternoon. Given his struggles with command, he was fortunate to escape with only two runs allowed in this one. Butler will carry a 2.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP into Wednesday’s start against the Giants.

They’re also 6-2 in their last eight games versus National League Central opponents and have won eight of their last 11 games versus a team with a winning record.
