Samardzija finally landed on the winning side of the decision ledger, improving to 1-5 with Sunday’s victory. He played with fire by allowing the nine hits, but limited the Reds to a two-run single by Scooter Gennett in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly by Tucker Barnhart in the seventh when it came to the scoreboard. Samardzija will carry a 5.26 ERA and 1.21 WHIP into tonight’s matchup.
Martinez surrendered three runs in 6 2/3 innings and was credited with the win in Saturday’s 5-3 defeat of the Cubs. Martinez allowed an RBI single to opposing starter Jon Lester in the first inning, then locked things down until rookie Ian Happ slugged a two-run homer in the seventh inning.
