San Diego Padres Fantasy Spin
Franmil Reyes launched a go-ahead solo homer to lift the Padres to a win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Reyes launched a titanic opposite blast to right-center field — his third dinger of the season — off Diamondbacks’ reliever Matt Andriese in the seventh inning to put the Padres ahead for good in this one. The 23-year-old slugger has gotten off to a rocky start, hitting .184/.267/.474 in 45 plate appearances this season. However, if you dig below the surface stats, there is plenty of reason for optimism with Reyes based on his raw batted ball data (94.9 mph average exit velocity) and expected statistics (.348 expected batting average), which reveal that he’s massively under-performing so far. Fantasy owners in deeper formats should remain patient, there’s massive power upside here and it’s way too early to give up on him.
Arizona Diamondbacks Fantasy Spin
Nick Ahmed went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the Diamondbacks’ loss to the Padres on Saturday. Ahmed put the Diamondbacks on the board with an opposite-field, RBI single off Padres’ reliever Gerardo Reyes in the sixth inning. He also doubled in the second to record his fifth multi-hit effort of the season. The 29-year-old shortstop has made significant strides offensively over the last two seasons after being a complete non-factor for several years. He’s gotten off to an excellent start, hitting .310/.323/.466 with 12 runs scored, one home run, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 62 plate appearances. He’s a viable middle infield option in deeper fantasy formats.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres have won four of Eric Lauer’s last five starts and are 4-1 in his last five road outings.
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are winless in their last four games but are 26-12 in Zack Greinke’s last 38 home starts.
Prediction:
The Padres have won four straight against the Diamondbacks and five of six in Arizona but the D-Backs are 5-1 in Greinke’s last six starts versus San Diego overall. I trust Greinke over Lauer, who has a career 4.49 FIP and has allowed 1.26 home runs per nine innings. He also owns a 5.01 ERA on the road and guys like Ketel Marte have fared well against lefties. Despite the Diamondbacks’ recent issues, I like them to salvage one game at home in this series.
The Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -135
