Padres Season Odds
The San Diego Padres are hoping that their stellar pitching staff can overcome a total lack of offense so that the club can compete in 2009.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have made the Padres 80/1 long shots to win the 2009 World Series and established their National League Pennant odds at 50/1.
The Padres still have some of the better pitching in the National League, especially after they decided to keep Jake Peavy despite rumors that he would be traded this offseason. Along with Peavy, the Pads have solid arm Chris Young, youngster Kevin Corriea (who has flashed some potential throughout his career) and Shawn Hill, who was previously in Washington.
Where the problem comes in is the offense, which once again has the potential to be the worst in baseball. Nobody scored fewer runs than San Diego last season and they didn’t add much this offseason to improve it. But that doesn’t mean that this club doesn’t have talent, because it does. Adrian Gonzalez is one of the better young power hitters in the game, while players like Brian Giles and Kevin Kouzmanoff make up a good supporting cast.
The good news is that San Diego doesn’t play in a very tough division. Nobody in the division is very balanced, with the Diamondbacks and Giants boasting good pitching but suspect offenses, and the Dodgers coming through with a solid offense but unproven pitching staff. So even though they face long odds, the Padres still have some good value because the pitching is good and if the offense can overachieve, you never know what they can do.
