Cubs interested in Shields?
CHICAGO, IL (The Spread) – James Shields remains one of the better free agents on the market and the Cubs seem to be kicking the tires on the starter.
David Kaplan of CSN Chicago is reporting that the Cubs are at least somewhat interested in Shields, who is apparently seeking $60-70 million over four years. The Cubs already added Jon Lester this offseason and could use another starter after also reuniting with Jason Hammel. The Marlins, Padres, Cardinals, Giants, Red Sox and Yankees have all been connected with Shields as well.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Cubs are 12/1 to win the 2015 World Series, which places them behind only the Nationals (11/2), Dodgers (8/1) and Red Sox (10/1) in terms of odds. They’re also 13/2 to win the NL pennant behind the Nationals (13/4), Dodgers (4/1) and Cardinals (6/1).
The Cubs are loaded with young position talent, including Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. But whether or not that young talent will produce is another question. The backend of the rotation is also a question mark, which may be why the Cubs are kicking the tires on Shields.
