Milwaukee Brewers’ slugger Prince Fielder edged out Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers to win the 2009 Home Run Derby.
Fielder captured the night with a couple of long blasts, including one that went over 500 feet and topped Cruz 6-5 in the final round. Both Fielder and Cruz were the leaders after one round, hitting 11 apiece.
Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols also advanced to the semis, with the Cardinals’ slugger winning a three-way playoff with Carlos Pena and Joe Mauer for the final spot. Those three had five dingers in the first round, while Adrian Gonzalez hit two and Brandon Inge couldn’t even muster one.
Fielder paid 10/1 tonight.
