Silva steals a win
Anderson Silva seemed certain to lose his UFC Middleweight Championship Saturday night, but a miracle submission allowed the champion to retain his title at UFC 117.
Silva defeated Chael Sonnen by submission in the fifth round after being dominated by the grappler in the first 20 minutes. Sonnen was cruising along but got sloppy while in Silva’s guard, which allowed the champ to secure a triangle choke and also lock in an armbar with it, which forced a subtle tap from Sonnen with 110 seconds left in the fight.
In the co-main event, Jon Fitch (+100) defeated Thiago Alves by unanimous decision. Fitch controlled Alves from bell-to-bell as he scored numerous takedowns and didn’t allow Alves to establish his striking.
